The MSX standard was the first attempt to establish a range of computers with similar specifications. Each manufacturer was to add something extra: Philips added LaserDisc support, while Yamaha added MIDI ports and a DX7 interface. Before the standard was completed, however, many superior machines were available and Commodore’s C64 software base was extensive, so MSX machines never became popular in Britain.
